Avodart (dutasteride) prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the male body. Dihydrotestosterone is also involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Avodart is used for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It helps to improve the urinary flow and also reduces the need for prostate surgery.

In some cases avodart is also given with another medicine termed as tamsulosin (Flomax). Carefully read the information booklet before having avodart, and do follow all the instructions provided by you health care professional.

Your healthcare provider may also check you for other prostate problems, like prostate cancer, before you initiate or while you take avodart. A blood test named PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is sometimes used to see if you may suffer from prostate cancer. Avodart also reduces the quantity of PSA measured in blood. Increases in your PSA levels while on treatment with AVODART should be evaluated by your healthcare provider. Only your doctor can tell if your symptoms are due to BPH or a more serious condition like prostate cancer. Do not donate blood until at least 6 months after discontinuing avodart.

Avodart with combination of alpha blocker tamsulosin treats urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. Avodart reduces the risk of getting the AUR (acute urinary retention). AUR is a situation, possibly requires surgery, where the prostate is so enlarged that it completely blocks urine coming from the bladder. Avodart is not approved for getting prevention from prostate cancer.

Since this drug can be absorbed through the skin and might harm an unborn baby, women who are pregnant or who are expecting a baby should not handle this medication.
